Iowa City remembers Gary Lee 'Smiley' Bloore, who died Dec.
22 at 79 after 45 years serving on the UI campus and cheering on local sports (neighbors recall his warm smile) as tributes pour in.

Luna’s Tacos, a family-owned food stand, will expand into a new brick-and-mortar location at 127 E.
Washington St. next to Insomnia Cookies. The restaurant will open by the end of January (owned by Isabel and Salatiel Luna) in a space that once housed Subway.

Iowa announced it will join the federal Summer EBT program with updated Healthy SNAP guidelines that take effect Jan.
1. Families will get $40 per child a month for healthy groceries—candy, soda, and certain prepared foods are excluded.
Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in Syria on Dec.
13 returned home after a respectful ceremony on Wednesday at the Des Moines airport. Their remains are heading to hometowns (one in Marshalltown on Saturday and one in Des Moines on Sunday) with scheduled funeral services.
