CULTURE NEWS

  • Summer of the Arts announced that the free Iowa City Jazz Festival will run from July 3 to 5, 2026 in downtown Iowa City & award-winning headliner ARTEMIS will perform on the Strauss Community Main Stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 4, 2026. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Iowa’s Center for Intellectual Freedom advisory council has grown from 13 to 26 members while the board of regents tabled approval of the center’s bylaws—its members will meet via Zoom on Tuesday, Nov. 18 to review the proposed rules.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Iowa City Liberty High School senior Saria Abdalla was named the Press-Citizen’s student of the week for her roles in school clubs & community service. She leads the Black & Latino Student Union, works with St. Luke’s Hospital and the Mariam Girls Club, and is close to earning a Nurse Aide Certification while co-founding the school’s first HOSA chapter.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study by the Iowa DNR showed that an average Iowan throws out 200 pounds of food from home—and up to 300 pounds when commercial waste is included. The study noted that these amounts are below the national average and offered simple tips like eating leftovers and planning meals to reduce food waste.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USPS officials urge Iowa City residents to send holiday packages early to ensure delivery by December 25th. Mail for Ground Advantage and First-Class must be sent by December 17th (Priority Mail is due by December 18th) and Priority Mail Express by December 20th (residents are also advised to turn on porch lights and keep pets secured to help postal workers).  WHO 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Iowa beat Xavier 81—62 on Friday night as Bennett Stirtz scored 21 points and Tavion Banks added 13. The Hawkeyes will face Southeast Missouri State on November 18.  We Are Iowa
  • Iowa’s TJ Hall, a senior defensive back with eight pass breakups and one interception, will play today against USC as he builds tape for NFL scouts. He said his game will be extra special with family coming from Fresno + Los Angeles, while coach Kirk Ferentz urged him to stay focused despite the homecoming feeling.  WHO 13
  • On November 14, Iowa City Regina High School beat Grundy Center 31—12 in the Class A semifinal game at the UNI—Dome in Cedar Falls. Key plays like interceptions and touchdowns helped Regina secure the win.  The Gazette
  • Iowa City Regina beat top-ranked Grundy Center 31-12 in a Class 1A state football semifinal at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Friday. The Regals snapped a 50-game win streak—setting up a state championship game against No. 2 West Lyon on Thursday.  The Gazette
