COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa City Public Library announced five years of support for its free snack program for children from the Walder-Christensen Charitable Fund, with funds set to expand daily snack distribution (the program runs between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.) and help ease food insecurity (it currently provides over 16,400 snacks each year).  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Iowa City Downtown District is hosting T4T Print Exchange: Trans Joy at 229 N. Gilbert from October 31 to December 13, with a reception and zine-making event set for November 8 (4–6 p.m.). The show features 17 prints from trans artists, including local artist Vero Hernandez, that celebrate community and joy.  Downtown Iowa City
  • Nik Star Designs is hosting its first solo bridal fashion show—celebrating bold and unexpected styles. The event will showcase creative bridal wear designs, and details on location and time have not been shared.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa City Fire Department urges residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as they set their clocks back on Sunday, November 2nd, to help prevent injuries—experts also recommend replacing alarms older than 10 years and verifying installation dates on sealed units.  KWWL
  • Iowa HHS announced a new funding opportunity to cut opioid misuse by awarding up to $14 million—$7 million is available now and another $7 million will be distributed in spring to support community programs.  We Are Iowa
