  • Shelter House in Iowa City will open its winter homeless shelter on Nov. 17 — two weeks earlier than usual due to funding challenges at the local, state, and federal levels. County officials and Shelter House staff are working to secure money and help move clients into permanent supportive housing.  KCRG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Procter & Gamble beat Wall Street expectations in its first-quarter report with earnings of $1.95 per share and revenue of $22.39 billion—its new forecast for fiscal 2026 now shows $400 million in tariff costs instead of $800 million. Shares rose 1 percent in morning trading and the company, a key Iowa City employer with state incentives for a new production line, expects full-year earnings between $6.83 and $7.09 per share.  The Gazette
  • Nicolet Bankshares announced it will acquire Iowa City-based MidWestOne Financial Group in an all-stock deal that will create one of the largest community banks in the Upper Midwest. The merger is set to close in mid-2026—if approved by regulators—and will not require any changes for current MidWestOne customers.  The Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cities across eastern Iowa have published Halloween schedules where trick-or-treating and special events are planned for different days; in Iowa City, trick-or-treating will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 31, while Waterloo holds a Downtown Trick-or-Treat today from Noon to 1 p.m.—other towns plan events on October 26 and November 1.  KWWL
  • Coralville resident Aaron Warner used artificial intelligence to bring his Halloween decorations to life at his home on 1969 Brown Deer Trail—where a giant skeleton insults passersby and Count Orlok recounts his history. His display was live last Friday, is live today, and will be live Sunday and on Halloween night as his family helps run the setup.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowa cattle farmers and meat market owners worry that importing beef from Argentina could shake an already weak market—since they say imported beef may not meet the strict U.S. safety and animal-welfare rules. They urge consumers to buy local beef to help keep the market steady as talks in Washington continue.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, a Johnson County district judge ordered the state to stop removing documents and artifacts from the 168-year-old research facility after moving boxes without proper inventory — petitioners must now file an administrative petition before any further action is taken. The ruling keeps the facility’s materials in place at the Centennial Building until a later court order.  The Gazette
  • The federal government shutdown is affecting Medicare telehealth coverage in Iowa as video appointments may not be reimbursed unless patients visit approved clinics or live in rural areas—University of Iowa Healthcare will cover some unreimbursed costs for certain virtual visits.  KCRG
  • The Iowa Supreme Court is considering a lawsuit against TikTok — the suit claims the app misled parents about how often children saw inappropriate content under the Consumer Fraud Protection Act, while TikTok's lawyers argue Iowa lacks jurisdiction.  KWWL

  • The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Office of Drug Control Policy is urging residents to take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at sites across Iowa where unused or expired medications can be safely disposed of—helping prevent misuse and environmental harm.  KWWL
