BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Department of Revenue said Jam Equities—owned by Asif Poonja, operator of at least seven Popeyes restaurants—owes nearly $1 million in overdue sales taxes dating back to 2022 after Popeyes revoked its brand license; the state has begun garnishing payments from stores in Altoona, Cedar Rapids, Coralville and Waterloo while Poonja has not responded to the lawsuits. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ After a year of changes, the Englert Theatre chose events director Keegan Colletta Huckfeldt as interim executive director effective Oct. 16 — following John Schickedanz’s resignation. The theater will hold a community open house on Nov. 2 at noon and 2 p.m. for locals to meet the staff and learn its history. Iowa City Press-Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Iowa's state revenue is projected to drop 9% from FY24 to FY26, falling from $9.75 billion to $8.13 billion and leaving a nearly $1 billion deficit, state officials said (Governor Reynolds linked the drop to tax cuts). The Revenue Estimating Conference will meet again in December to review the numbers for next year's budget. WHO 13
