COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at 9 a.m. the First United Methodist Church is hosting an immigration forum to inform visitors about challenges immigrants face and to encourage support for undocumented individuals. Church leaders plan to build solidarity with those affected under current policies and will hold more events in the future.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Iowa City High School senior Lily Rantanen was named the Press-Citizen's Student of the Week after her school poll closed on Oct. 9; she serves as executive editor of The Little Hawk (the student newspaper that earned national finalist nods) while managing a heavy course load and many extracurricular activities.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting January 1, 2026, SNAP recipients in Iowa will no longer be able to purchase soda, candy, and some in-store prepared foods with their benefits — a move by Iowa Health and Human Services and Governor Reynolds to encourage healthier eating amid rising obesity and chronic illness.  WHO 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, Hy-Vee began offering discounted weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy for $499 a month—joining Costco and Sam's Club in providing these medications to customers with a valid prescription and without insurance.  We Are Iowa

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The demolition for the Gather Iowa development has begun on the Coralville Strip near the University of Iowa softball and track facilities, clearing a 10-acre site for new retail and over 290 apartments aimed at young professionals. Rael Development Corporation leads the project with phase two council approval underway for next summer and a planned completion in 2027 — the redevelopment will include a hotel, 34 affordable housing units, and community spaces.  KCRG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Iowa and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission will host the Savannah Bananas for two Banana Ball games at Kinnick Stadium on July 3 and 4, 2026—both games start at 7 p.m., and fans must join a ticket lottery by October 31, 2025.  KWWL
