COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct. 1, community leaders including journalism professor Brett Johnson and American Library Association President Sam Helmick spoke about free speech at a rally on the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City.   • Cali—a four-year-old Pitbull who loves treats—is available for adoption at the Animal Rescue League and is best suited for active families since her playful nature may overwhelm households with small children. The league also offers a Dog’s Day Out program and holiday photoshoots from Oct. 30th-Nov.16th, including a special session on Nov.15th at Iowa Live Studio.  We Are Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • Carver-Hawkeye Arena will host the first religious service of its kind when The Well of Iowa holds its Revival in the Heartland event on Oct. 5, featuring worship, prayer, and testimony from University athletes. University officials confirmed it is the first such event at the arena (the church rented the venue for $4,500 plus fees), marking a breakthrough use of the facility.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa's sensor network that tracks nitrate levels in its rivers is set to shut down by summer 2026 if at least half of the $500,000 needed for operations does not materialize—data that guides water safety and environmental decisions. The Iowa division of the Izaak Walton League is leading a crowdfunding campaign aiming to raise $600,000—supporting essential water quality monitoring from local wells to the Gulf of America.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County withdrew its proposal to build a joint law enforcement facility with Iowa City on Oct. 2, opting to pursue a county-exclusive project and planning to ask voters for a bond in November for a new jail and sheriff's office. HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, Oct. 4, the University of Iowa will host the College Football 26 Extra Life Charity Challenge at Kinnick Stadium—an EA Sports virtual football tournament running from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that raises funds for Stead Family Children's Hospital as players aged 16 or older pay a $25 fee and can earn extra benefits for higher donations.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
