- ➤ The University of Iowa held its 2025 Homecoming Parade Friday evening with a 5:45 p.m. start at the intersection of Gilbert and Washington and an end at Gilbert and Iowa Avenue—former basketball coach Lisa Bluder served as Grand Marshal amid scheduled street and parking closures. KCRG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Immigration advocates and local leaders held a press conference Friday after ICE arrested Jorge Gonzalez Ochoa at Bread Garden during his shift on Thursday morning—he is charged with fraud and resisting arrest and remains in Linn County Jail. KCRG
- ➤ Escucha Mi Voz community organizer Alejandra Escobar condemned the ICE arrest of Jorge Gonzalez, an Iowa City resident and immigrant, at a downtown business today—she said the action unfairly targeted immigrants. Iowa City Press-Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Iowa City Community School District approved $500K in construction bids for the Center for Innovation's Dream Accelerator project in partnership with Junior Achievement—City Construction will handle general work while Tricon Construction will manage interior finishes following the board meeting on Sept. 23. The project is funded by PPEL funds and is expected to be completed by spring of the 2025-26 academic year. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ Regina Catholic High School senior Howie O'Rourke was named the Press-Citizen’s Student of the Week for his leadership and strong grades; the contest poll closed on Sept. 25—new polls open on Sept. 29. Iowa City Press-Citizen
