COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crowds lined First Avenue between Mercer Park and City High on Sept. 24 for the Iowa City City High School homecoming parade where students, teachers, and local schools marched and tossed candy—showing excitement—while local families cheered the festive event.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iowa Latino Heritage Festival, the largest Latino festival in Iowa, returns this weekend at Western Gateway Park — the event will celebrate community and culture.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coralville City Council spent more than two hours discussing automated license plate readers—addressing privacy concerns and contract details—before approving a policy for their use. Mayor Meghann Foster noted that authorities in Marshalltown made an arrest with these cameras during a recent shooting.  KCRG
  • The Johnson County Board of Supervisors announced it will stop pursuing a joint law enforcement facility with Iowa City after a 4—3 split in the city council and the sheriff rescinded his support—county officials will now focus on securing land for a new sheriff’s office and jail with a potential bond on the November ballot. This decision comes as the county seeks a solution that meets legal requirements and community input.  The Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Iowa announced its men's and women's basketball schedules for the winter season, with both teams scheduled to play Nebraska twice. The men's team will start at home against Robert Morris on November 4th and compete in a Big Ten tournament from March 10th—15th in Chicago, while the women's team will open with an exhibition on October 30th and begin conference play at Rutgers on December 6th.  We Are Iowa
