- ➤ A local husband and wife duo from central Iowa launched Pesche—a mushroom mocktail now served at popular restaurants like Bubba in downtown Des Moines—to offer a nonalcoholic alternative as more Americans cut back on alcohol. - ➤ Public Space One announced a new $100K grant program — Banned but Not Silenced: Resisting Censorship Through Art and Activism — that will match artists and activists with local students to exhibit challenging art in dialogue with the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art through spring. - ➤ Iowa law now requires all public schools to limit student cell phone use during class and lunch under House File 782. Several districts report better grades, higher attendance and fewer behavior problems though some students miss chatting on their phones—schools still allow them for emergencies. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Johnson County’s Auditor’s Office announced the early voting schedule for the November 4 election—voters can cast ballots at several locations in Iowa City and nearby with weekday sessions from October 15 through November 3 and additional hours on November 1 and 2. The schedule also includes sessions at select health care and library sites. KCRG
- ➤ Coralville will hold elections in November with a contest for a new mayor—Meghann Foster is not running as she will seek a state senate seat—and eight candidates will compete for three open council seats while voters also decide on a 1% local option sales and service tax. - ➤ A longtime downtown bar owner wants the city to review a rule set in 2009 that stops new bars from opening within 500 feet of one already in operation. Trey Jennings of Brothers said the rule limits competition and confuses exemption criteria—City Administrator Geoff Fruin said the city will keep enforcing the code to protect safety and the local economy.
