ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Representatives from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources hosted a virtual hearing on Thursday to review water quality standards for toxic substances, nitrates, and E. coli so Iowa can update its human health criteria to match updated EPA guidance—another virtual meeting will be held on Sept. 23 at 2:30 p.m. with public comments accepted until Oct. 20. - ➤ Volunteers gathered at F.W. Kent Park near Oxford on Sept 17 to collect Golden Alexander seeds for a prairie restoration project hosted by Johnson County Conservation — some seeds will support a new 30-acre project and Project Wingspan for native pollinators. - ➤ Johnson County Sheriff Brad Kunkel said he ended the joint law enforcement facility project after city and county leaders failed to align on timelines—he noted that Iowa code requires bond referendums on a general election ballot and that without city support, at least 60% voter approval is needed for the $80 million project to move forward. - ➤ Iowa City council voted on Tuesday to rezone nearly 10 acres on Greenwood Drive, the vacant site of Roosevelt Elementary, into a Medium Density Multi-Family Residential Zone. Indiana-based TWG plans to build 187 affordable housing units — with 113 parking spaces — on the property that closed in 2011 and has remained vacant since 2021. KCRG
