ECONOMY NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After an ISU employee posted comments about Charlie Kirk, Iowa’s public universities placed workers on administrative leave and began a two-week investigation into potential social media policy violations that could lead to termination — the move follows lawmakers’ calls for action.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, following the social media fallout after Charlie Kirk's murder, the Iowa Board of Regents directed state university officials to investigate employees who posted content that violated established policy—investigations were to be completed within two weeks with university presidents managing any resulting discipline.   • Sen. Chuck Grassley turned 92 on Sept 17 when he celebrated with a Dairy Queen Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard—gifted by Sen. Tim Scott—and an ice cream cake from Sen. Joni Ernst while working in Washington, D.C. He serves as Senate president pro tempore and is third in line for the presidency—having served since 1981, he may run again in 2028.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Voters in Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty will decide on a 1% local option sales tax in November, with half of the funds mandated for property tax relief and the tax set to take effect on July 1 if approved.   • The Johnson County Sheriff ended his support for a joint law enforcement facility with Iowa City and now backs a standalone sheriff's office and jail—he said no viable path exists for a joint model.
