  • After a fatal shooting ended conservative activist Charlie Kirk's event in Utah, Drake University students said they now feel unsafe—one student asking 'Am I going to be shot at next?'—while a professor has opened her office for support.  We Are Iowa

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indie rocker Sharon Van Etten will perform with The Attachment Theory at The Englert Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 as part of Hancher's Infinite Dream Festival—she will also join a free public interview with Nightbitch author Rachel Yoder at the Old Capital Museum at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17.  The Gazette
  • Living History Farms will host fall festivities in September, featuring events like the Cast Iron Cook-Off and Applefest for local visitors to enjoy.  We Are Iowa
  • The Englert Theatre in Iowa City will host actor-musician Noah Reid at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12—tickets are $20 for students and $39.59 to $49.50 for the general public. Reid, who is known for both his acting and music, will perform songs from his EP and covers from his work on Outer Range.  The Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that June saw a net loss of 13,000 jobs and more job seekers than openings—the first time since April 2021. Local analyst Ben Murrey said Iowa’s job market will continue slowing as manufacturing, agriculture and financial services lag while the Federal Reserve plans to discuss rate cuts next week.  We Are Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Iowa Youth Writing Project faces closure after the University of Iowa cut its funding, yet it still plans several fall events including the Ghosts on the Radio workshop—set for Sept. 13—as well as a video game camp on Oct. 2-3 and a November poetry workshop. The program is seeking a new home through meetings with potential partners.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Iowa City recently installed reflective backplates on traffic lights along the Highway 1 corridor to help reduce crashes by 15%—the project received partial funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation and the city will use them on all future signals.  KCRG
  • The Johnson County Board of Supervisors and Iowa City City Council will meet at 5 p.m. today to discuss plans for a new jail—designed as a joint facility for the sheriff’s office and police—after a University study shows over 70% voter support. Some opponents worry that tax funds may shift away from non-police programs as the project moves forward.  KCRG
  • Iowa political leaders prayed for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 — a suspect has been taken into custody.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Several high-profile downtown properties including The Chauncey will be sold at a sheriff’s sale this fall after a foreclosure ruling in April; the auction is set for Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office—bidders must be at least 18 and provide a financial institution letter, with the outstanding judgment reaching about $26.5 million.  The Gazette
