CULTURE NEWS

  • The inaugural Iowa City Songwriters Festival begins today at the Englert Theater and runs through Saturday with events at Black Angel and James Theater. The festival will offer shows, workshops, panels — and a conference designed to empower local songwriters and explore new program options with the University of Iowa.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Iowa researcher was part of an international team that found a new plasma wave high above Jupiter’s north pole using NASA’s Juno spacecraft—this discovery may help scientists study plasma in harsh space environments. The team said the wave, known as the Alfvén-Langmuir mode, could offer clues about similar phenomena on other giant planets and exoplanets.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A committee supporting a 1% local option sales tax launched coordinated campaigns in Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty ahead of the November vote. Each city will decide how to spend its funds if the tax passes— with Iowa City planning to invest in affordable housing, Coralville aiming to build a new recreation center, and North Liberty proposing improvements to its fire station and parks.  The Gazette
  • The Iowa City Council approved a rezoning request that will let TWG Development build a 187-unit affordable housing complex on a 9.9-acre site at 611 Greenwood Dr.—the former Roosevelt Elementary that will be demolished soon. The project will redirect traffic to Greenwood Drive and prompt ongoing monitoring of road and pedestrian safety as development advances.  The Gazette
  • Former state Sen. Jim Carlin said U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson’s entry in Iowa’s Senate primary was scripted—he claimed this plan was put in motion after Sen. Joni Ernst announced she would not run again. Hinson’s campaign said she is moving quickly to secure a win for Iowa.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • New SNAP rules require adults 18 to 54 without children to work, train or volunteer 20 hours a week to keep food benefits—these changes took effect on Sept. 1. Advocates warn many Iowa families, including parts of the 260,000 SNAP users, may face more food insecurity and increased reliance on food pantries as work requirements expand on Nov. 1.  We Are Iowa
