COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mosaic Iowa City, a nonprofit that started as Ten Thousand Villages, reopened in a new space to offer fair trade goods by local immigrant artisans. The nonprofit received a grant from Iowa City Downtown District and plans events — featuring Ukrainian and Sudanese art — to support local cultural heritage.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • An Iowa City man, Janard Fitzgerald Goins, 34, got a nine-year federal prison sentence for drug trafficking and gun charges after police found drugs, cash, a Glock 17 handgun, and phone photos of the weapon at his home in January 2024 — he will serve a three-year supervised release after his term.  KWWL
  • Police responded at about 8:55 p.m. Thursday on Deforest Avenue and Sycamore Street after receiving reports of shots fired in Iowa City—evidence of gunfire was found and no injuries were reported.  KCRG
  • An Iowa City man, Tyler Rogers aged 45, is facing a felony first degree theft charge after he allegedly allowed a logging company to knock down 130 trees valued at over $100K from his neighbor’s property—he posted a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 12.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Iowa City Police investigated a gunfire incident reported on August 28 near Deforest Avenue and Sycamore Street—evidence of shots fired was found with no injuries and a reward of up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest is offered.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A University of Iowa survey of 751 Johnson County residents found that 74% support a ballot measure to build a new $106 million jail with 140 beds to ease overcrowding, and officials plan to ask voters on the November 2026 ballot. County leaders passed a measure on August 28 asking Iowa City to help with costs while they survey land near Highway-6 and Riverside Drive for the facility.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

  • FRYfest returns to Coralville where local fans celebrate coach Hayden Fry's legacy and look forward to the Hawkeye football season. The festival features a blood drive at 8:00 a.m. at the University of Iowa Healthcare DeGowin Blood Center and honors Iowa farmers.  KCRG
  • University of Iowa Athletics has upgraded its entry system for today's football kickoff at Kinnick Stadium—fans will tap their phones to enter instead of scanning barcodes. The change is aimed at reducing ticket fraud while easing entry during heavy game day traffic and Labor Day weekend events.  KWWL
