Good morning, Iowa City. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 22nd of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Defense lawyers for former University of Iowa student Ali Younes argued that prosecutors have not proven he intended to kill a 63-year-old woman during a 2022 Iowa City incident—claiming his comment about fleeing to Mexico was unrelated while prosecutors maintain his actions showed he meant for her to die.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A rare black moon will occur Saturday, Aug. 23 when the new moon phase leaves a dark patch in the sky rather than a bright moon—stargazers may notice stars and planets if skies remain clear. The next black moon is set for Aug. 31, 2027.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Ruby-throated hummingbirds that arrive in Iowa around mid-April will start their southward migration in August and September—locals still have time to watch them before they head to wintering areas in Central America or Mexico. People can attract these small birds by offering a homemade mix of water and sugar instead of store-bought nectar.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the Wednesday, Aug.20 meeting, the Iowa Utilities Commission resumed public sessions and landowners in red shirts objected to the Summit carbon capture pipeline amid concerns over safety, devalued land, and halted permits—officials plan to schedule more open hearings soon.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Iowa City will dissolve its Community Police Review Board to comply with a new state law that bans citizen oversight of police — the city council voted on August 19 and will hold a final vote in September to complete the process.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Homeland Security is seeking dismissal of a lawsuit by University of Iowa international students who fear deportation because reversing the change to their SEVIS status has provided the relief they sought—attorneys have not yet responded and a hearing on the case is set for August 27.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
