ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Iowa cattle farmers have seen beef prices rise as ground beef cost more than $6 per pound in June, up nearly 12% from last year. Farmer Steve Swenka said the high prices help farmers—yet they worry that consumer demand or rising tariffs could change the market soon. KCRG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Johnson County Board of Supervisors plans to ask Iowa City Council to form a joint law enforcement authority—this group will plan a shared facility for the sheriff’s office, jail and police. The board will adopt a resolution next week and if Iowa City agrees, the authority will form by October so that voters can decide on a bond measure for the $106 million project in November. - ➤ Iowa City's four electric buses are out of service as the city awaits parts following the 2023 bankruptcy of manufacturer Proterra—PhoenixEV has not given a firm timeline for repairs. The city plans to buy new electric buses from Gillig while exploring other options to keep transit reliable. Iowa City Press-Citizen
