BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A proposed merger between Tegna and Nexstar may let Nexstar own more Iowa TV stations if the plan is approved. The $6.2 billion deal will close by the second half of 2026 and may force station sales — a test of FCC ownership rules. Iowa City Press-Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 14, the University of Iowa began its reSPARC initiative (part of its 2022-2027 plan) to raise revenue and improve efficiency without plans for layoffs. Nearly 100 UI employees from 35 departments will work in teams to propose changes in academics, finance, enrollment, and IT. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ More than 14,000 students return on August 25 as the Iowa City Community School District starts the new school year with a state-compliant cellphone ban and expanded full-day preschool programs at all 20 elementary schools. The district is also launching construction projects—including City High auditorium upgrades and field renovations at West and Liberty High—and has hired four new administrators. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A survey by the Board of Supervisors shows that more than 74% of Johnson County residents support a bond measure to build a new sheriff’s office and jail, and support rises to over 80% after more details were shared—officials plan to propose the measure to voters in November for a joint facility funded by property taxes.
