  • Huxley offers a chance to enjoy Iowa State Fair food away from the heat as Flight Bar — Grill unveils a special fair menu with items like jalapeño popper egg roll, fried Oreos, and pickle margarita. The menu will run until August 17, and owner Matt Pacha says some dishes may stay if they prove popular.  WHO 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowa State University graduate Maddison Wild left Iowa after graduating in 2019 for a higher-paying job and now lives in Chicago because she felt the state offered few career options. A nonprofit report shows Iowa lost more than 3,000 college-educated residents and nearly $400,000 per graduate in tax revenue — a trend driven by limited local job opportunities.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four candidates are running for three Iowa City Community School Board seats as incumbents Jayne Finch and Ruthina Malone seek reelection while newcomers Jennifer Horn-Frasier and Dan Stevenson join the race in the Nov 4 election—incumbent Shawn Eyestone is not running because he is pursuing an MBA and a teaching career. The board oversees nearly 14,000 students and both long-term and daily operations in the district.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County’s Temporary Redistricting Committee is preparing to submit its precinct plan after a new Iowa law requires supervisors to be elected by district rather than at-large—this plan uses 2020 census data and must be sent by Oct. 1 for further mapping by the Legislative Services Agency. A public meeting will later decide which new districts get two-year or four-year terms for board seats.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Johnson County will soon install free vending machines for harm reduction supplies like Narcan, condoms, gun locks and Plan B in public locations — the machines will be placed in Coralville and North Liberty libraries, at the Deadwood Tavern in Iowa City and outside the Health & Human Services building, with more sites planned in smaller communities.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Iowa’s first West Nile Virus case in 2025 in an adult from northern Iowa—where mosquitos are testing positive—and advised residents to use insect repellant and wear long sleeves to protect against bites.  WHO 13
  • Johnson County Public Health and Iowa State Extension reported a positive test for West Nile Virus in a mosquito sample collected between July 27 and August 2—marking the first test since 2023; no infections were reported. Residents were advised to use EPA-registered insect repellents and wear long-sleeved clothing to reduce mosquito breeding.  KWWL
