- ➤ United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Open Heartland and Neighborhood Centers will host the second year of the Ready Set School supply drive on Friday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Aug. 16 to provide school supplies for 2,000 Iowa City students. Some students will pick up supplies at the event while others will have packages delivered through schools or volunteers (43% of district students qualify for free or reduced lunch). KCRG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Adesola Miller, owner of a local bar, was arrested Tuesday at 11:45 p.m. at Coral Ridge Avenue and Commerce Drive for OWI—this marks her second offense this year after police detected alcohol on her breath and signs of impaired balance. KCRG
- ➤ Iowa City police detained a juvenile on Monday night near Sycamore Mall—recovering a gun and evidence at about 6:30 p.m. while the suspect now faces multiple weapons charges before being sent to a detention center. KWWL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A University of Iowa survey found that 74% of Johnson County residents support a bond referendum for a new jail because the current facility is overcrowded, deteriorated, and not ADA compliant — the county board of supervisors plans to place the referendum on the ballot in 2026 to address these issues. KCRG
- ➤ On July 10, Hawkeye Waste Systems purchased workers’ compensation insurance to avoid a potential court order banning the company in Johnson County—its temporary agreement will last as long as the coverage is maintained with a hearing set for January. The lack of insurance had originally come to light after a workplace accident led to a fatality and felony charges against the company and four officials. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ The Coralville City Council approved a 1% local-option sales tax measure to appear on the November ballot to fund property tax relief and capital projects—such as a new recreation center east of the current facility at ST Morrison Park. Staff estimates using FY24 retail sales data that the tax could generate between $3.6 and $7.3 million per year and it will take effect on July 1 if voters pass the measure. The Gazette
