COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen will climb Mount Katahdin in Maine today to finish his Appalachian Trail hike—he began the 2,198-mile trek in March with support from Warrior Expeditions and will soon meet his wife and two daughters.  WHO 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a 15-year-old juvenile on Monday after officers responded to shots fired on the 1600 block of Sycamore Street behind Sycamore Mall where evidence of gunfire and a recovered firearm led to multiple charges.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA tested air quality on Iowa City's east side and found that odor came from trace amounts of toluene emitted by the Loparex facility at levels between 58.8 and 425 parts per billion—well below levels that would harm health. The agency found no environmental violations and will keep monitoring the area.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a special meeting on Tuesday, several Iowa Board of Regents members asked to change the new DEI policy, and the board approved the revisions by a vote of 7 to 1. The changes remove specific references and include board audits every two years to ensure balanced instruction — the updates aim to help students understand all sides of controversial topics.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa City's Community & Family Resources is a grant-funded nonprofit that provides training on opioid overdoses, Narcan use, and trauma-informed care while targeting adults 45 and older through local senior programs and rural outreach to reduce binge drinking and addiction. The initiative, led by Mariah Temple (who draws on her own recovery experience), aims to lower statewide binge drinking by 5% by February 2027.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
