  • Jacky Michael Mabikulu, a 35-year-old from Coralville, was sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute and carrying a firearm during a drug crime—he will serve four years of supervised release after his sentence.  KWWL

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Iowa State Fair on Thursday, Brian Britt’s boar Duke won the Big Boar contest by weighing 1,268 pounds—though it fell short of last year’s top weight—and Britt said he is not returning next year. Earlier that day, Abby Willson’s ram Judah won the Big Ram contest by weighing 505 pounds.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Iowa graduate student union condemned the school's investigation and the suspensions of two staffers after videos showed them discussing ways to bypass rules on recording class talks. Union leaders said these actions hurt academic freedom and warned President Wilson to protect the campus community—officials stressed that following proper policies is key.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

  • The Iowa River Powerhouse dam — which links Peninsula Park to Coralville near the former Iowa River Power restaurant — will undergo $675,000 in repairs to remove debris and fix concrete spalling, with construction planned for either September through November this year or May through October next year.  The Gazette
