Iowa City Farmers Market will stop selling red $5 tokens starting Sept.
5 after continuing sales until Aug. 29 because a review found financial risks and counterfeit issues — blue tokens and Double Up Food Bucks remain available. Vendors can submit tokens for reimbursement by year-end as final redemption details are announced.
Dozens of side-by-side vehicles rolled into Iowa City Saturday to honor 14-year-old Payten Stout, who received lifesaving treatment after a critical illness, and to raise funds for the hospital that saved her.
Payten led the ride as a turning point in her recovery.
🎓 Education
The UI International Writing Program is rebuilding after losing federal funding last year, with private donors + support from the University of Iowa keeping it operating in Iowa City.
The program is exploring new methods to select visiting writers and hopes federal funding will return soon.

In 2023, researchers found Iowa ranked second in the nation for new cancer cases, with rates rising since 2013.
Mary Charlton from the Iowa Cancer Registry said a report on key drivers will be sent to the state in August, examining environmental factors like water nitrates in Des Moines.
