  • CommUnity Crisis Services of Iowa City is raising $175,000 for a new mobile pantry truck + as the current aging van limits volunteers from reaching those in need, the group is nearing its fundraising deadline with most donations coming from individual donors+ to help serve residents facing transportation challenges.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge stated Friday that she is likely to grant a preliminary injunction on parts of the new Iowa prescription drug law—designed to help small pharmacies and reduce drug costs—as she planned to issue her ruling before the temporary restraining order expired Monday morning. The decision could affect how pharmacy benefit managers regulate prescriptions in the state.  The Gazette
  • Iowa City residents will elect three council members in November, including District B where incumbent Shawn Harmsen faces nonprofit director Amy Hospodarsky who plans to address affordable housing and improve mental health support. Candidate paperwork opens Aug. 11 and ends Aug. 28 with a primary required if three or more file for District B.  The Gazette
  • Yesterday, the House passed a bill that cut $9 billion from foreign aid and public broadcasting funds—removing about $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that supports Iowa PBS and local stations. Iowa PBS lost $3.5 million and Iowa Public Radio lost about $1 million in federal funds, and both may cut programs as they adjust to the loss while the bill now awaits the president's signature.  We Are Iowa
