  • An Iowa City resident suffered burns after a cooking fire on Friday evening near Westwinds Drive and was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital — firefighters arrived five minutes after dispatch and found the fire had already been put out with damages estimated at $1,500.  KCRG

  • Molly’s Cupcakes in Iowa City will close on Saturday, August 10 after 13 years due to mounting economic challenges— the business posted on Facebook thanking loyal customers, staff and the local community while inviting them to visit in the coming weeks.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • A Traer woman, Karina Cooper, was found guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting her husband, Ryan Cooper, in June 2021 during a trial in Linn County that lasted from July 2nd to July 11th—she now faces an automatic life sentence without parole.  WHO 13

  • Iowa City's Finance Department earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for its fiscal year 2026 budget — this marks the 14th year the City has been recognized for strong policy documentation, financial planning, operations guidance, and communication.  KWWL
