Good morning, Iowa City. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa closed on July 9th after 13 years of helping immigrant and low-wage workers with wage theft disputes—citing political threats and internal divisions. It had recovered over $250,000 in lost wages during its operation and provided free workshops on practical skills before its closure.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Iowa City has partnered with Dreamwell Theatre to host free arts and crafts pop-up events where Johnson County residents and local organizations can donate or pick up new or gently-used art, craft, school and upcycling supplies. Donations will be accepted on July 20 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Donation Drive-Thru and on August 7 and 8 from 2 to 6 p.m., while free supplies will be available on August 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Side Recycling Center—participation is free.  KWWL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Iowa will not renew its lease on Macbride Nature Recreation Area after July 1—costs of a $15 million startup and $1 million each year make it unsustainable. UI WILD programs will continue, and the university is working with the Army Corps to find a new location for these educational efforts.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers are urging Iowa to adopt connectivity corridors (ecological corridors) to help wildlife safely move between isolated habitats. A report said the state lost 99% of its prairies and 75% of its woodlands over the past 200 years, leaving 260 native plant species endangered.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • About a dozen Coralville residents spoke at Tuesday night's City Council meeting to object to a plan that would install Flock Safety license plate cameras near key intersections to alert police when a vehicle in an Amber or Silver alert is seen — critics including the ACLU say the system threatens privacy. The council, which has budgeted $19,000 for the cameras, will review the plan as public concerns grow.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa HHS ended the Integrated Health Home program to transition to a new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model, with the program officially stopping on Dec. 31 after initiating changes on July 1—local nonprofits now worry that this abrupt shift may cut crucial care for people with serious mental and behavioral health challenges.  The Gazette
