The Iowa City Community Police Review Board voted unanimously to dissolve after a state law banned boards like theirs—city officials are now developing plans to form a new Chief Advisory Board to increase public engagement in police matters.

Mercy Iowa City's liquidation trust is asking a federal bankruptcy judge to require MercyOne to accept a $31,000 payment to settle a long legal dispute stemming from Mercy Hospital’s bankruptcy in August 2023 and UI’s subsequent rebranding of the downtown campus in January 2024—MercyOne rejected an initial payment attempt, citing federal law.

On July 7, a 20-year-old Guatemalan construction worker and West Liberty High School graduate was deported to Guatemala after being detained by ICE in Cedar Rapids—leaving his Iowa community shocked.
