ECONOMY NEWS

  • Forty-nine crisis service workers at CommUnity Crisis Services in Iowa City will be laid off on July 17—TV9 has reached out for comment.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa City Community Police Review Board voted unanimously to dissolve after a state law banned boards like theirs—city officials are now developing plans to form a new Chief Advisory Board to increase public engagement in police matters. The board will hold its final meeting in August while the City Council reviews the proposal.  KCRG
  • Mercy Iowa City's liquidation trust is asking a federal bankruptcy judge to require MercyOne to accept a $31,000 payment to settle a long legal dispute stemming from Mercy Hospital’s bankruptcy in August 2023 and UI’s subsequent rebranding of the downtown campus in January 2024—MercyOne rejected an initial payment attempt, citing federal law.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • On July 7, a 20-year-old Guatemalan construction worker and West Liberty High School graduate was deported to Guatemala after being detained by ICE in Cedar Rapids—leaving his Iowa community shocked. His attorney said that despite letters of support from local leaders and faith groups, demonstrators planned protests at ICE offices and congressional locations while his family awaits further contact.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
