ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night the roof of the State Historical Society at 402 E. Iowa Avenue caught fire and Iowa City firefighters brought the blaze under control by 12:15 a.m. while finishing cleanup by 1:55 a.m. (one firefighter was injured and the cause is under investigation).  KWWL

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 22, a Cedar Rapids man named Nicholas Bernard pleaded guilty after a high-speed chase that ended in a crash near E Market Street in Iowa City—he faces charges for eluding officers, driving under the influence, controlled substance possession, and leaving the scene with sentencing set for August 28.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mercy Iowa City committee said it will file a complaint against MercyOne—citing its failure to produce sufficient emails as ordered—by August 7, while MercyOne asked a higher court to review the dismissal of its appeal and maintains it followed its retention policy. The legal dispute follows a nearly six-year management relationship that ended before Mercy Iowa City filed for bankruptcy in August 2023.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will end the Integrated Health Home program by December 31 as it moves to a new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model. Transition meetings for adults started on July 1 while meetings for children will begin August 1 — a public comment period remains open until July 30 at 4:30 p.m.  WHO 13
