EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Gallup survey conducted from Sept. 23 to Nov. 18, 2024 found that Iowa students in grades five through 12 reported mixed engagement in class, with 76% saying they take part while only 47% enjoy their lessons. The study of 962 students recommended more hands-on, student-driven learning—methods that may help boost classroom engagement—and stressed a need for improved learning experiences.  We Are Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Water experts warn that at-home nitrate tests may give misleading results since a kit posted on social media showed 80 milligrams per liter while CIWW measured around 8 milligrams per liter at the Fleur Drive and McMullen plants (experts from Drake and Iowa University have noted that at-home kits use a different scale) and they advise residents to trust CIWW’s EPA-approved methods.  We Are Iowa

  • Sen. Grassley said the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits program is causing hardship for families of fallen and disabled first responders and urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to replace longtime leader—Hope Janke. He noted that nearly 900 claims have been pending for over a year and demanded that changes be made within two weeks—highlighting the mismanagement that has led to yearslong delays.  We Are Iowa
  • Coralville and North Liberty police will partner with the county sheriff's office to fund their mental health liaison, Kieonna Pope, after state funding ends so that crisis support stays in place. City councils in both communities are set to review the plan during upcoming meetings.  KCRG
