Good morning, Iowa City. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 24th of June.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business groups and employer health plans filed a lawsuit (on June 23) in federal court alleging that Iowa's new law regulating pharmacy benefit managers will raise drug costs and violate the First Amendment and federal law; the law, signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds on June 11, will take effect on July 1 (supporters say it is aimed at keeping struggling pharmacies open).  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • University of Iowa student Broc Hawkins launched Volta, a ride-share app designed for college students after he got stranded during Thanksgiving break as a freshman. The app, now available at 16 universities (with subscriptions costing $5, $7 or $10), will expand further in the coming months.  KCRG
  • A group of Iowa businesses has filed a lawsuit to overturn a new law that sets rules for pharmacy benefit managers — they say the law breaks free speech and will raise health care costs by stopping employers from sharing ways to save on prescriptions. The suit, led by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry and joined by three other groups, comes as over 200 pharmacies have closed in the past 10 years.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Recent changes to Iowa law allow Johnson County residents to use fireworks on July 3 and July 4, with displays allowed only between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 3 and until 11 p.m. on July 4 while a $250 fine remains for illegal use; Iowa City and Coralville plan festival fireworks shows and local governments cannot ban use on these dates or on New Year’s Eve (Senate File 303).  Iowa City Press-Citizen
