CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Coralville police responded to a call about a disturbance at Western Hills Mobile Estates on 2nd Street at 11:54 p.m. Wednesday and found a man shot twice in the chest who died at the scene—no arrests have been reported as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assists with the case. KCRG
- ➤ A man was fatally shot at Western Hills Mobile Home Park in Coralville shortly before midnight on June 11 and died at the scene after receiving first aid—police report the incident is isolated and no arrests have been made. Iowa City Press-Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at Iowa’s three public universities will pay higher tuition for the 2025-2026 school year—rates rising 2.7% to 3% for in-state students—after the Board of Regents approved the increases on Thursday. The board also approved salary raises for the university presidents, with new base salaries taking effect July 1. We Are Iowa
- ➤ At least two dozen students and staff from Iowa’s public universities spoke at Wednesday’s Board of Regents meeting to oppose a proposal that would eliminate required DEI content from some courses—regents postponed a vote on the new policy until next month. KCRG
- ➤ Iowa’s Board of Regents approved salary raises for the presidents at ISU, the University of Iowa, and UNI during a meeting on June 12 in Iowa City. The increases, which take effect on July 1 — with UI President Barbara Wilson receiving a $65,000 bump, Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen a $25,000 rise, UNI President Mark Nook nearly $13,000, and Regents executive director Mark Braun nearly $20,000, reflect a minimum 3% pay increase across the board. - ➤ The Iowa City Community School Board approved a $104.6M five-year facility plan on June 10 to add independent fieldhouses at City, West and Liberty High Schools and upgrade fine arts spaces—West High’s fieldhouse will be ready in winter 2027-28, City High’s in spring 2028, and Liberty High’s in summer 2028—while construction for other improvements is set to begin soon. - ➤ On June 12, the Iowa Board of Regents approved a 3% tuition increase for Iowa State, Iowa, and UNI to help cover rising costs such as inflation, faculty recruitment, and deferred maintenance.
