Good morning, Iowa City.
Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen has passed the halfway mark on the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail after reaching Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and he will head to New Jersey this week — he refreshed his gear with a haircut, beard trim, new shoes, and his wife’s hiking poles while trekking with fellow veterans — and he expects to finish in Maine by August.
The University of Iowa will fix up its technology lab for $28 million so the Computer Science Department can expand and will spend $23 million on the bus facility to add space for electric buses — it also plans to tear down three buildings to build a new UI Health Care inpatient tower. The Board of Regents will consider these plans on June 12 and work will start this fall.
The Johnson County Conservation Department announced the promotions of two long-serving employees, as Dave Gustafson becomes Operations Superintendent and Jeremy Rieck advances to Natural Resource Manager—bringing a combined 42 years of experience to their roles.
University of Iowa Health Care settled two malpractice lawsuits on Monday for $3.5 million—$1.5 million for a wrongful death after a pulmonary embolism during leg surgery and $2 million for permanent leg damage after plastic surgery.
The settlements are part of a seven-year agreement with UI Physicians that does not use state general fund money for 2025.
