Good morning, Iowa City. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A female resident with dementia from a Coralville care facility wandered away in January and was later found at a Nebraska truck stop—265 miles away after hitching a ride with a semi-truck driver and engaging in sexual activity, which led state inspectors to fine the facility $3,000 for resident-safety violations. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Iowa City council is considering a 1% local option sales tax to generate about $8 to $10 million each year from nearly $1 billion in purchases—excluding items like groceries, rent and utilities. Voters must approve the measure in November for half of the funds to go to property tax relief and the rest for infrastructure and public facility projects. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ The Iowa City Downtown District is gathering signed petitions from property owners to expand its boundaries as it works to renew its Self-Supported Municipal District status (the expansion will add the University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus and extend the district south of Burlington Street, with the Council set to vote on the change before the current authorization expires in summer).
