COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families served by the North Liberty Community Pantry have turned to food help as tariff changes push prices up and force many to skip meals—pantry staff distributed 54,000 more pounds of food than last year and welcomed over 150 new families. Pantry director Ryan Bobst said donations and volunteers are needed to meet the growing demand.  KCRG
  • The Iowa City Bike Library is launching a $1M campaign to expand youth programs, upgrade energy efficiency—adding 80 solar panels in June—and secure a sustainable financial future while continuing its long-standing mission of getting more people on bikes. It has raised over $600,000 so far and will add work benches, outdoor seating, and a bike skills loop to enhance its services.  The Gazette

  • Hazzard County, a bar from Cedar Rapids, said it will open a new country-themed location in Iowa City's Pedestrian Mall at 118 S Dubuque Street—where The Field House once stood. The bar will show games on TVs and is set to open on August 1.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law that will require Iowa high school graduates to pass a multiple-choice U.S. civics test—students must score at least 60% and may retake the test as needed. The test, which covers topics from the Declaration of Independence to citizens’ rights, will become a new graduation requirement next year.  We Are Iowa

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law on May 27 that gives state workers paid leave after the birth or adoption of a child—four weeks for mothers, one week for fathers, and four weeks for adoption, following a three-year bipartisan effort.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
