Prestige is a biannual section for Iowans 55+ that features stories & resources on issues affecting older adults.
The section is published twice a year to share real perspectives on senior living in Iowa.
🎭 Culture
Iowa City Parks Department director Juli Seydell Johnson displays colorful, intricate quilts in the department’s lobby and offices—each piece captures local parks and nature with Norwegian art influences.
She began quilt-making in her late twenties and later honed her style after attending a folk school in North Carolina.
🎓 Education
The UI Senior College offers 10-14 courses each semester for local seniors taught by retired and current faculty and community experts—classes meet for four two-hour sessions on Zoom or in local venues while each course costs $30 and enrollments exceed 1,000.
Retired professor Miriam Gilbert and local student Susan Loomis say the program lets learners explore subjects they deferred during their careers.
