EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Liberty High School runs an adaptive P.E. class that gives students a chance to build physical skills and gain confidence. Teachers tailor activities to meet each student's needs (the program shows a real local impact). Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ University of Iowa student leaders met with the Board of Regents on May 19 to ask that the proposed tuition increase be vetoed after rising costs forced many to consider other options—an extra $279 at UI could mean a big change for many students. They urged more transparency and support from the state as the board will vote on the plans in June—hoping to keep higher education affordable. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ Eastern Iowa high school seniors will receive diplomas over the next few weeks at ceremonies set at venues such as the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in downtown Cedar Rapids and Xtream Arena in Coralville. Graduation events for schools including Jefferson, Kennedy, Washington, Prairie, Linn-Mar, Marion, Clear Creek Amana, City, Liberty and West high schools are scheduled from today through June 1 — each following its own timetable. - ➤ Six eastern Iowa schools received up to $20,000 each from state funding to expand work-based learning opportunities as part of a new summer pilot program linking classroom lessons to local STEM businesses. The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council announced the awards on Thursday for schools including Waterloo, Holy Family Catholic in Dubuque, Iowa City, Marshalltown, and Cedar Rapids (Metro High School and CityView High School) to help students prepare for future STEM jobs. - ➤ Iowa City Liberty High School’s adaptive P.E. class completed a robotics project so that student Anna Bilskemper (who has Rett Syndrome and uses an Eyegaze device) can join class activities like tossing a balloon and passing a soccer ball. Teachers, a robotics student, and grant funding from the ICCSD Foundation helped build the equipment to let her play with her peers. Iowa City Press-Citizen

- ➤ A UI report says the University of Iowa must spend about 14.8 million dollars to repair roads, upgrade cell service and update facilities at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area while also paying 917,000 dollars a year for upkeep. The report notes the lease for the 485-acre park expires in summer and that if the university ends the lease it may face an extra 500,000 dollars for building demolition. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ Gov. Reynolds announced that USDA approved a federal waiver to limit SNAP benefits to healthy foods—items like fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and bread will be allowed while candy, soda and juices under 50% fruit or vegetable content will be disallowed. The waiver, which will affect about 270,000 SNAP participants, will take effect Jan. 1. We Are Iowa
