  • Iowa City partnered with nonprofit Table to Table to support University of Iowa students during residence hall move-out by setting up nine donation drop-off locations plus a battery recycling service. The program collected 2,325 pounds of food, 95 pounds of toiletry products plus recycled 43 pounds of batteries to help reduce fire risks from improper disposal.  KCRG
  • Sanctuary Pub will reopen around the first week of June under new owner Yara Elamir — the bar and grill at 405 S. Gilbert St. will update its menu with high-end items like prime rib, steak and salmon, add Sunday brunch, and refresh its historic interior while keeping its popular pizza offerings.  The Gazette

  • Cedar Rapids restaurateurs Ariel Barrios and Ozzy Aguirre opened Xolo in North Liberty at 1295 Jordan St on May 13, which mirrors the menu at their popular Mextizo + they will hold a grand opening today to welcome guests from Coralville, Iowa City and Tiffin.  The Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A Colorado man, Nickoles Julio Deherrera (39) from Boulder, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he threatened a bank teller with a fake gun during a January Wells Fargo robbery in Iowa City; he tried to take back his plea, but Judge Ian Thornhill (who set a five-year minimum) did not allow it and he must also pay $950 in restitution.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College students are speaking out about proposed tuition increases at all state universities, with UNI set to rise 2.7% and UI and ISU 3%—UI will see an added $279 per term. The Iowa Board of Regents will vote on the proposals on June 10th.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship released an animal welfare handbook—designed to guide local officials and law enforcement in handling complaints and documenting cases—and will host a webinar on Wednesday, May 28 to review the guide. The handbook serves as a quick reference for Iowa code and recommends that teams plan ahead for animal relocations and response efforts.  The Gazette
