- ➤ Since April, local animal shelters have seen a surge of kittens during kitten season; the ARL of Iowa now cares for over 250 kittens while PALS in Grinnell recently paused intakes after receiving three litters. Shelters advise the public to let kittens stay with their mothers. We Are Iowa

- ➤ The Amana Whirlpool plant in Amana will be shut down from May 18-22 (for production adjustments) and closed on Memorial Day, May 25, affecting one of our area's largest employers. KCRG

- ➤ Monica Nassif, daughter of Mrs. Meyer, will host a book signing on Sunday, May 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Vintage Road Coffee in Granger—where attendees can buy her new book I Bottled My Mother and learn how her mother's Midwestern values shaped Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day. Iowa City Press-Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ As thousands of students walk the stage this week, colleges warn that graduates may face slower hiring since employers are cautious. More than 6,100 UI graduates and UNI, Iowa State students are advised to treat their job search like a class project (highlighting versatile skills) to secure roles. KCRG
- ➤ Adam Zimmermann, a Cedar Rapids administrator with nine years of experience, will become Liberty High School principal on July 1, replacing Justin Colbert, who is leaving for a deputy superintendent role in Southeast Polk. He is a familiar face in Iowa City (he attended Iowa City West High School). KCRG
- ➤ Iowa City School Board met privately Thursday (in a closed session) amid ongoing financial concerns and did not answer questions regarding Superintendent Degner’s status; if the board intends to remove him, it must notify him by today, and it will hold a meeting to accept its special education director’s resignation.
