CRIME NEWS

  • A University of Iowa fraternity was suspended until at least July 1, 2029 after a November 2024 hazing incident at its Alpha Delta Phi house where police responded to a fire alarm and found 56 pledges covered in ketchup, mustard, and alcohol while arresting Joseph Gaya for interfering with officials — the pledges confirmed no injuries occurred.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Bike to Work Week kicks off today in Iowa City as riders like Matt Burkey of the Iowa Bike Coalition choose to bike to work to save on gasoline and reduce traffic. He said he spent only $201 on gas last year—much less than many households spend monthly—and he expects more locals will join to support downtown shops.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fires at the Iowa City Landfill have increased because people are not disposing of lithium batteries properly; officials recorded eight fires so far this year and warn that more fires may endanger staff and nearby areas—superintendent Jennifer Jordan stressed that proper battery drop-offs are needed to prevent further incidents. Local authorities call on residents to use the battery drop-off program to help keep everyone safe.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa House approved Senate File 383 on Monday—shifting power from pharmacy benefit managers—to set a baseline for pharmacy reimbursement and let patients choose their pharmacies, a move that comes after over 200 Iowa pharmacies closed in the past decade, including more than 30 in 2024.  We Are Iowa
  • The Iowa House passed the pharmacy benefit manager reform bill on Monday and sent it to Governor Kim Reynolds for her signature— the bill, which passed 75—15, requires PBMs to reimburse pharmacies based on the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost and a professional dispensing fee.  WHO 13
  • Iowa City will close the Iowa River Trail near Dairy Queen for repairs this summer and replace an aging wooden bridge with a concrete retaining wall — a project estimated to cost about $450,000 that will lower future maintenance costs. A detour along Riverside Drive — past Kelly's Auto, Dairy Queen and Bruegger's Bagels will let trail users continue their commute until the work is finished by fall.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Government Notes across eastern Iowa report that Cedar Rapids is hosting Bike to Work Week events with rides and meal discounts while Iowa City and Johnson County offer free breakfast for cyclists today — Marion is studying the addition of decals for the 988 mental health crisis line on city vehicles, College Community School District named Bret Jones as principal for its alternative schools, and North Liberty invites high schoolers to apply for a youth council serving 2025 to 2026 —.  The Gazette
