  • Federal authorities indicted Jerome Smith, 36, for supplying fentanyl pills that led to the 2024 fatal overdose of a 21-year-old in Coralville — he is set to face a jury trial on June 2 at the federal courthouse in Davenport and could spend decades in prison if convicted.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A group of about 90 Jewish faculty, staff, students, and alumni from Iowa colleges wrote a letter condemning efforts to limit free academic speech and restrict international student visas in the name of fighting antisemitism—University of Iowa professor Lisa Heineman said the statement warns that national actions can harm local campuses and urged lawmakers to protect university freedoms.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

  • Senate lawmakers advanced a revised property tax bill that gives Iowans a 25% discount on home values up to $125,000 instead of a $50,000 homestead exemption—aimed at addressing the concerns of small communities.
