COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa City has selected Grand Rail Development to build a mixed-use six-story building on the vacant lot at 21 S. Linn St. & the plan includes retail, entertainment, office space and 20 residential units, with city staff set to work with the team over the coming months to finalize details.  The Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Englert Theatre announced that the inaugural Iowa City Songwriters Festival will take place from September 4 to 6 across downtown venues. The festival will feature live performances by acclaimed songwriters, engaging panel discussions, and twenty scholarships for emerging musicians—applications close May 30.  Downtown Iowa City

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Iowa paused its search for a new dean for the Graduate College (after a finalist chose another opportunity) and will name an interim leader; the Law dean search (paused in December) is set to resume in the fall.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Iowa City Council approved the first reading of a plan to rezone 5.49 acres on the north side for an 84-unit apartment complex — a measure that came amid neighbor concerns over traffic and development size. City staff will study the feasibility of a sidewalk connecting Happy Hollow Park — and the council will hold two more votes before final approval.  The Gazette
  • Labor lawyer and former state representative Nate Willems launched his campaign on May 7 to run for attorney general in 2026 and said he will focus on protecting Iowa workers & seniors while holding corporations accountable for wage theft. He plans to rebuild consumer protections if elected to bring fairness to the office.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
