Good morning, Iowa City. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.

CULTURE NEWS

  • FilmScene in Iowa City lost $30,000 in funding after the National Endowment for the Arts began canceling grants early, as Executive Director Andrew Sherburne was informed last Friday. The theatre has seen stable attendance and more donations but will reach out to lawmakers to help replace the lost funds—an effort that reflects wider cuts affecting community arts.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County launched three child care programs in 2023 to help parents work and support centers through June 30, 2026. The initiatives include a child care assistance incentive, infant-toddler scholarships and a wage enhancement program backed by federal relief funds + local business fundraising + planned efforts to secure future support.  The Gazette
  • The City Council approved its first reading of a plan to build 84 apartments on a lot between North Dodge and Governor streets near a city park in northeast Iowa City Tuesday night. The developer, who has long tried to build on the land, said he may sell the lot or finished buildings—while a local homeowner also raised concerns.  KCRG
  • The Iowa DOT said residents can switch from a REAL ID to a standard driver's license (with a $10 fee) if they are concerned about privacy. The standard license works for driving and general identification but cannot be used for air travel or federal building access (only a REAL ID or another approved document will be accepted).  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • Iowa's Senate File 638, which would use a 10% tax on vape products to fund cancer research (pending votes on the Senate floor and the House Ways & Means Committee), is still waiting as lawmakers work on the final budget deal. UI cancer expert Dr. George Weiner said state funds are needed to attract top researchers (recent federal funding cuts have made it more urgent).  KWWL
