CRIME NEWS

  • Iowa City police arrested 51-year-old Christopher Gingerich after he aimed a can of dust cleaner and a lit lighter at officers in his garage on Mormon Trek Boulevard Sunday evening when his husband tried to remove the can and got injured (he now faces charges of Domestic Abuse Assault, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, and Interference with Official Acts).  KCRG

  • FilmScene, a nonprofit that shows films, lost its National Endowment for the Arts grant because federal funding was not prioritized by the President+ the group said it will keep working and urged locals to support its film showings and membership donations.  KCRG

  • Iowa DOT offices report long wait times as people rush to obtain Real IDs by Wednesday for air travel and access to federal buildings; one Ankeny office recorded waits up to two and a half hours and officials advise scheduling an appointment and bringing proof of identity, a social security card, and two mail pieces—Real IDs take up to 30 days to arrive and will not require reapplication at renewal.  We Are Iowa
  • State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott announced her campaign to run for Congress to challenge Rep. Zach Nunn in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, saying she wants to ensure Iowans have a voice in Washington.   • Local mushroom hunter Clay Packard said that finding morels in eastern Iowa relies on checking around fallen trees like elm and cottonwoods during a short early spring season — he has gathered several pounds in Johnson County recently. He warned that morels need to be cooked to avoid toxicity — while other hunters keep their best spots secret and a Houby Days Festival is set for May 17 and 18 in Cedar Rapids.  KCRG

  • Real estate developer Tracy Barkalow’s TSB Holdings wants to sell a 5.49-acre property at 902 N.
