CRIME NEWS

  • A Muscatine man was arrested early Friday after driving onto the sidewalk in front of the building that houses City Hall and the Police Department at around 2:15 a.m.—police said he showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking throughout the night, and he now faces a charge of operating while under the influence.  KCRG
  • An Iowa City man who was charged on Tuesday with sexually abusing a juvenile was charged again on Friday with three counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a 5-year-old in his car — a judge set his bail at $75,000 and issued a no-contact order to protect the child.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School district officials said that after the cellphone policy began on Jan. 21, 88 percent of the 362 staff surveyed reported better student engagement in middle and high schools as students placed phones, earbuds, or headphones in a bag, purse, or locker during class. Board President Ruthina Malone said officials will seek more student feedback to address concerns from students needing special accommodations as the district aligns its rules with new state requirements.  The Gazette
  • Iowa City High School senior West Kauper was named the Press-Citizen’s Student of the Week after completing an advanced research project on how elementary school libraries meet student needs in the Iowa City Community School District — her poll closed April 10 and a new one will open April 14.   • An international student's visa was revoked on April 4 as UI International Programs Dean Russell Ganim sent an email saying the decision was not made by the university - UI International Student and Scholar Services offered a meeting to explain next steps. The graduate student union later released a statement urging students to check their visa status and seek help from the Immigration Law Clinic if contacted.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, 65, announced in a video message that she will not seek re-election in 2026 as she plans to focus on her family—she has served as governor since 2017 when Governor Terry Branstad left to become U.S. ambassador to China.  The Gazette
  • Gov. Reynolds signed Senate File 75 into law yesterday changing how county supervisor elections are held in large counties with public universities—counties must now elect supervisors by districts and fill most vacancies with special elections. Johnson County must form a temporary redistricting commission by May 15 and create a precinct plan by Oct 1 so it can meet the new requirements by the 2026 general election.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today the new UIHC North Liberty campus held a ribbon cutting after years of planning and now houses the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, the Sports Medicine department, an emergency area and a 24-hour drive-thru pharmacy. UIHC said the 60-acre facility has 84 exam rooms, 36 inpatient beds and more emergency care and operating rooms and will help train new healthcare professionals.  KWWL
