- ➤ On Wednesday afternoon, a large fire burned an apartment building near Coral Ridge Mall, causing extensive damage estimated at one million dollars and leaving 22 residents homeless while two firefighters had minor injuries and several pets died—community members shared their sadness as investigators work to determine the accidental cause. - ➤ A fire in a 12-unit apartment on Boston Way in Coralville displaced 22 residents Wednesday afternoon after an accidental blaze spread near Coral Ridge Mall — firefighters treated two with minor injuries. Iowa City Press-Citizen
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Greater Iowa City Inc.—Community Foundation of Johnson County—and South of 6 are offering ARPA-funded grants ranging from $3,500 to $20,000 to small underrepresented businesses in Johnson County until April 30. Eligibility requires at least 50% ownership by underserved groups and in-person support sessions are available, with awardees to be announced in June. Iowa City Press-Citizen
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Micah Hyde— a former Hawkeye and NFL player— visited an entrepreneurship class at Tippie College of Business on April 9th to help plan the charity golf classic scheduled for this summer. He partnered with students and faculty from UI to organize the inaugural event. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ Iowa City Community School District approved a $2.1 million letter of intent with Junior Achievement on April 8th—this project will expand hands-on career programs in its Center for Innovation and is expected to be fully operational by spring. Iowa City Press-Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Iowa City officials signed a contract with City Construction for a $13.7 million renovation of City Park Pool that will begin next month and finish in about a year. The project will create a three-pool complex, including a 6-lane, 50-meter lap pool with depths from 3.5 to 5 feet — the modern update will serve all ages though the facility will remain closed this season.
