- ➤ Iowa City Downtown District announced that the 8th Annual Downtown Block Party will be held on Saturday, June 28 from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The festival will offer a variety of activities for all ages and free entertainment, with $10 pre-sale tickets available for the event cup (which lets adults sample beer and wine). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Iowa DNR burned 320 acres at Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area in Johnson County due to very low humidity — the controlled burn cleared a part of nearly 14,000 acres that usually would not burn easily. The Gazette

- ➤ Governor Kim Reynolds is expected to sign a bill that bans cellphone use during class time—school districts must create emergency call rules and adopt a model policy before the 2025-26 school year. WHO 13
- ➤ Johnson County bought an apartment complex off Hollywood Boulevard last summer and is restoring 15 units to offer affordable housing for limited-income renters who will pay no more than 30% of their income. The county is partnering with local nonprofits to manage the renovation for 20 years—amid a housing crisis where 55% of renters face a cost burden. KCRG
- ➤ A bill in the Iowa House will let residents catch catfish by hand, allowing up to three fish (each at least 10 inches long) to be taken during day time. The measure was advanced by a House subcommittee as some conservation groups argue the practice may hurt catfish numbers. The Gazette
- ➤ Dr. Parijat Joy, a former UI physician, is suing the university and board of regents for disability discrimination and retaliation after his child was diagnosed with a neurocognitive disability in March 2019—he claims the university forced him onto a nine-month unpaid leave, escalated harassment after a wrist fracture, and did not renew his contract on March 5th, 2021.
