EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Graduate students in the University of Iowa's English department received an email saying that both current and admitted prospective students will have their funding offers rescinded and replaced with updated terms that do not guarantee support due to federal research funding cuts. The union representing graduate students said it plans to speak with department heads and protest if the funding is not secured (COGS President Cary Stough expressed concern about the university shifting from its academic mission). - ➤ City officials are discussing two proposals for the vacant lot at 21 S. Linn Street—one from Salida Partners and Iceberg Development Group offers a 12-story building with 91 homes and a performance venue while the one from Grand Rail Development plans a six-story building with homes, shops, and a roof garden. Residents requested more green space and support for those in need, and further discussions will continue at City Council meetings in April. KCRG
- ➤ More than 100 people gathered outside the Department of Homeland Security office in Cedar Rapids on Monday to support a Guatemalan mother from Postville who was ordered to appear after ICE agents visited her home on March 14. The woman and her children were released after a five-minute meeting—her next check-in is set for May—and local advocates will continue to accompany her at future appointments. KCRG
