CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A video shows an Iowa City police officer punching 48-year-old Jonathan Kim several times after Kim allegedly hit him first on Tuesday — the officer then handcuffed Kim when police tried to serve an arrest warrant for assault charges on South Gilbert Court. Iowa City Press-Citizen
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State workers moved closer to receiving paid parental leave after the House voted 87-2 on a proposal that offers four weeks of paid maternity leave, one week of paid paternity leave, and four weeks of leave for adoptive parents. The bill now awaits action in the Senate while Gov. Kim Reynolds, who made this a priority, said it will help state job competitiveness & support working families. Iowa City Press-Citizen
- ➤ Johnson County officials warned that tax mailers sent to property owners use a 10% valuation increase that overstates the expected hikes—Auditor Julie Persons said most residents should see a rise between 5.4 and 7.1 percent if approved and urged using the online tool or calling the office for accurate figures. A public hearing on the proposed rate is scheduled for March 26. The Gazette
- ➤ On Thursday, the Iowa House passed a bill that requires adult websites to verify users’ ages to block children from accessing obscene material. If enacted, the law will force websites to check IDs or use other commercially reasonable methods — and may result in civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation. Iowa City Press-Citizen
