Iowa City officials are teaming with Shelter House to manage a homeless encampment near Terry Trueblood recreation area (a January count showed 15 to 18 residents) by adding garbage cans and weekly walk-throughs to limit hazards like battery stockpiles that led to vegetation fires.
The Clear Creek Amana School Board approved adding a school resource officer for next year, but the plan must gain approval from Johnson County supervisors today since the officer will be a county deputy.
Most supervisors oppose the funding while the county sheriff defends the move as a way to improve student safety.
The remains of Maj. Jeffrey R.
O’Brien and Sgt. Declan J. Coady, soldiers killed in Kuwait on March 1, returned yesterday to the airport, with funeral services planned later in the week at the Veterans Cemetery in Adel — community members are invited to honor their sacrifice.
