  • CommonGround Iowa connects state farmers with people on farms & in cities to answer questions about where food comes from. The program, run by Iowa Corn with help from the Iowa Soybean Association and the National Corn Growers Association, shows that 36% of U.S. farmers are women.  We Are Iowa

CRIME NEWS

  • Iowa City man Euan MacGregor pleaded guilty to embezzling $3.2 million from his former employer and was sentenced last week in Sacramento to 41 months in federal prison—he must repay over $3.2 million and serve 36 months of supervised release.  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Burger fans cast 6,000 ballots and nearly 400 restaurants were nominated in Iowa's Best Burger Contest; the top 10 finalists, including one from Iowa City, were chosen after 16 years of the contest. Judges will visit each finalist to pick a winner on May 1 that will kick off May Beef Month — the contest celebrates local beef raised by Iowa cattle farmers.  We Are Iowa

  • Graduate workers at the University of Iowa said they worry that changes in funding contracts (shifting to a year-by-year policy) could make it hard for them to keep studying. The university said it has always tied funding to available money and confirmed that no current agreements will be canceled despite recent funding cuts.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
